"....The drugs no longer help; the lies are getting old. I want to be myself, but who that is I don't know."
- Robyn
As part of our mission, ISAT now has a program to treat alcohol and drug problems, which often are seen in conjunction with traumas such as sexual abuse and domestic violence. ISAT provides a comprehensive substance abuse treatment program, including a thorough intake assessment, individual treatment planning, group therapy, and couples therapy as indicated.
Many victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence turn to substance abuse to deal with their pain. Some start using drugs and alcohol as adolescents, leading to escalating medical problems and health care costs in their adult years. Many offenders also use drugs and alcohol. Some use substances during the commission of their crimes. Alcohol and drug use represent one of the most serious threats to clients' lives and health.
The success of ISAT's substance abuse treatment program is based on helping clients understand that they can change chemical abuse patterns and associated cognitive distortions and thinking errors, while increasing feelings of self-control, self worth and empowerment. These are many of the same principles utilized in ISAT's treatment programs for sexual abuse, domestic violence and child abuse. Other objectives focus on helping clients identify cycles of behavior and learn stress management and sobriety skills, in addition to communication, relaxation, problem solving, and relapse prevention skills.
